Transmissible Diseases Handbook

Putting efforts into the creation of a reference manual published under the umbrella of our Association is an important step in the process of European standardisation, and should provide a useful tool for zoo practitioners, zoo managers and European legislative authorities dealing with wildlife and zoo animals.

The handbook summarises information on various diseases, including susceptible animal groups, zoonotic potential, distribution, transmission, clinical signs, pathology and post-mortem findings, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control, legislative requirements  (especially according to European legislation) and a list of relevant diagnostic laboratories.

The Fourth Edition of the Transmissible Diseases Handbook, compiled by EAZWV's Infectious Diseases Working Group (IDWG) was published in February 2010. It has been made available to EAZA, the authorities of SANCO in Brussels, members of the EU Animal Health Strategy Committee, the CVOs (Central Veterinary Officers) of all 27 EU Member States, and the OIE.

The Fifth Edition is currently under development by the Joint EAZWV/EAZA Infectious Diseases Working Group, and the database below will be updated as each chapter or fact sheet is completed. Please be advised some search options may still be incomplete, namely susceptible species.

In the database below we have also included some fact sheets compiled by the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV) for their 2019 edition, as both associations have a strong relationship and are committed to joining efforts and working towards a future joint edition.
