EAZWV Member Professional Code of Conduct and Professional Ethics

Section 1: GENERAL COMMENTS

All members of the European Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians (EAZWV) are required to maintain high standards of ethical conduct. The EAZWV hereby adopts the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) European Veterinary Code of Conduct  as well as recognising the national veterinary codes of conduct of its member countries.

If a member is found to be in breach of these rules, the EAZWV board may take commensurate action.

 

Section 2: OBLIGATION OF PROFESSIONAL ETHICS

EAZVW members have the following additional responsibilities:

To his/her professional associates, fellow employees, and the public, as well as to the animals in his/her care;

  • To display the highest integrity, the best judgment or ethics possible, and use professional skills to the best interests of all;
  • To maintain high standards of personal, professional, and business conduct and behaviour;
  • To promote the interests and mission of the EAZWV;
  • To aid the professional development of those who enter the zoo and wildlife veterinary profession by assisting them to understand the functions, duties, and responsibilities of the profession;
  • To endeavour at all times to improve animal care in zoos and aquariums and other wildlife care settings and to promote wildlife conservation;
  • To continue to study, apply and advance scientific knowledge and demonstrate a commitment to modern veterinary practices.


Elected officers and appointed positions

Members elected to officer positions by the membership or appointed to association roles have a key role in upholding this code of conduct. They are expected to discharge their duties in abidance and in accordance with this code of conduct, as well as having an increased role in promoting good conduct by EAZWV members. Members elected or appointed to governance positions will be especially vigilant of upholding this code of conduct where the discharge of their duties warrants handling of sensitive information or leads to potential conflicts of interest.
