Stephanie Sanderson

Executive Director EAZWV

Stephanie graduated from Cambridge University in 1994 with zoology and veterinary degrees. After three years in general practice she moved into a full-time career working with wildlife, initially as veterinary officer for one of the UK’s largest wildlife rehabilitation units and then, having attained her MSc in Wild Animal Health at the Royal Veterinary College/London Zoo she was appointed as Chester Zoo’s first full time vet in 1999. She set up of an in-house veterinary service and endocrinology laboratory from scratch and also initiated a three year residency programme in conjunction with Liverpool University which has been running since 2001 and has just achieved ECZM accreditation. 

Stephanie joined the zoo's senior management team in 2007 and took up roles as Director of the Living Collection and of Science and Education. In 2015 she set up her own consultancy focusing on the interface between wildlife, the environment and society. She took up the role of Executive Director of EAZWV in January 2016.

Stephanie also has a keen interest in disease contingency planning and zoo animal welfare assessment. Her proactive and inclusive approach has resulted in production of national guidelines on managing BTV 8 in non-domestic species, zoonotic disease risk, pre-export health screening and zoo animal welfare and in her appointment as chair of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquarium (BIAZA)’s veterinary advisory group and as an advisor to the UK Government Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

Stephanie has held  position on BVZS council since 2006 - 2013, she is a trustee of Zebra Foundation for Zoological Education and has been active member of EAZWV since 2000, serving as EAZWV vice-president 2013-14 and EAZWV president for 2015.
