EAZWV May '17 News!

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The Zoo and Wildlife Conference is now only a week away and we are very much looking forward to hosting you along side IZW and Berlin Zoo and Tierpark!

We have an exciting programme for you of talks, workshops and social events - and for those of you who have not yet registered, its not too late! - just click here.

We do realise however that not everyone can come so this newsletter contains information on the EAZWV's activities, Working Group, Section and Partner reports, update on delivery of our strategic plan and voting instructions.

There is also a downloadable version of the General Assembly Agenda with links to documents that we will refer to in the meeting but wont go through in detail - so you may want to take a look at it ahead of time.

Finally - for those of you joining us, safe travels - and for those left at home working, I hope your animals stay health and you get to enjoy some wonderful spring weather,

General Assembly

This year's General Assembly will be held at 14:00 on Saturday 27th May 2017 in the conference lecture hall . We hope to see you there! Please check out the agenda here.

If you cant come to the General Assembly you can still take part in voting. Voting will open on 24th May: Click here to vote on new officer positions, constitutional changes and much more. Voting is open to all Full, Student, Retired and Honorary members that have been part of our association for TWO YEARS or more. (NOTE if you are planning on voting in person in Berlin please do not vote online!) Please contact membership@eazwv.org if you have any questions on voting.

Delivering the EAZWV strategy - how to get involved:

In April 2016 members of EAZWV’s board and Advisory board got together to explore how we can best achieve our mission: to advance the health, welfare and conservation of wild animals. We have now set up a series of working groups to make these ideas into reality.A summary of the working group briefs can be found here. We would love to have you involved so if you would like to volunteer to take part in any of these groups, or indeed have some ideas/feedback for them please do get in contact. We have set up a forum where you can post your ideas. Alternatively you can write to me at membership@eazwv.org and I will sent them on to the relevant working groups.

EAZWV now produces a news feed of interesting articles, papers, job postings, events etc. at least twice weekly (often daily). These are available here. You don’t need to be a Facebook member to view them – but if you do want to have them delivered straight to your Facebook account, just “like” our EAZWV Facebook page!

EAZA Species Management Programme Veterinary Advisor Database

We are delighted to announce that we now have an up to date, downloadable database of all current EAZA EEP and TAG veterinary advisors. This can be found by clicking here (remember to login - this is a member only benefit). Do take a look. Together with EAZA we will be updating it weekly - so do keep going back to the website to check who is the current advisor. EAZWV Continuing Education: Conferences and Summer Schools

Zoo and Wildlife Health Conference 24-26th May 2017, Berlin.

This is shaping up to be a fabulous conference. It’s not too late to register - click here for registration and to see the programme.

2nd Joint conference between EAZWV/AAZV/IZW Prague 2018.

We are also busy planning for our next joint conference with AAZV in Prague. To fit in all the great talks we will extend the conference from our usual 3 days to 5 days - bringing the total conference length to a week. The preferred dates are Saturday 6th October 2018 - Friday 12th October 2018 - put the dates in your calendar now.

EAZWV Student 2017 Workshop - 24-27 August, Budapest

The Student Section is happy to announce that this year's EAZWV Student Workshop will be in Budapest, Hungary, from the 24 to 27th of August. Save the date if you want to join us and hear all about this year's exciting topic: "Avian Medicine". More information soon in the website and our facebook groups.

New Member applications:

We have had 158 new applications from 34 nationalities  since last General Assembly, 24 since the last newsletter – click here to see a complete list of your new colleagues are. As part of our constitution new members have provisional status until they are approved at the GA or 3mth post application to give time for any objections to be lodged.

EAZWV partners with the EAZA Biobank

The EAZA Biobank will be a primary resource for supporting population management and conservation research. It aims to hold blood, DNA, tissue and serum from all animals in EAZA zoos and aquaria, and is designed such that samples are registered in ZIMS and available to benefit efforts to ensure the genetic and physical health of intensively managed populations.
EAZA is keen to get information of existing practices relating to potential biobank material and would like the EAZWV membership to take part in a short survey. The survey should not take more than 10 minutes to complete and can be accessed here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PLXHDHK.
