Overview: Do you want to enhance your ability to interpret cytology with a focus on zoo and wildlife cases? During this workshop you will learn how to best utilise this quick and effective tool, review its range of indications and refresh how to prepare good cytology. The keynote lecture will provide insight into classic and unusual entities from the point of a veteran zoo pathologist and we will work up cases provided by participants and experienced zoo and wildlife pathologists in an interactive session. This workshop is aimed at students, ECZM residents, zoo and exotic veterinarians and advanced practitioners.

Daniela graduated from Munich Veterinary School in 2006 and immediately joined the Universities diagnostic pathology team. She completed her pathology residency at Liverpool University five years later and became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists and an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Zoo and Wildlife Veterinary Pathology. Since 2011 she is a member of the renowned Pathology Division of International Zoo Veterinary Group, focusing on diseases of avian, mammalian, reptile, fish and invertebrate species, whilst maintaining her particular interests in neuropathology and dermatopathology. Daniela is a TAG veterinary advisor and an expert in penguin pathology.  She continuously lectures and publishes in the zoo- and wildlife field and has a passion for teaching. 

Maja Ruetten Dr med vet, DiplECVP, FVH (Veterinary Pathology)
Maja graduated from Zurich Veterinary School in 2000, after which she directly joint private practice in the Swiss mountains. In 2001 she started her doctoral thesis in veterinary pathology, completing it in 2004, before moving on to a Residency at the University in Zurich, Switzerland. Maja has been a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists since 2008 and fulfilled the role of Senior Zoo Pathologist at the Institute of Pathology of University of Zurich. In 2016 she founded a private diagnostic laboratory in Tagelswangen (Zurich). Her main research interest is iron metabolism in exotic species. Maja is an elected member of the council of Swiss Veterinarian and co- editor of the oldest veterinary journal in the world, the Swiss Archive of Veterinary Medicine.

Presenter: Imke Lüders, Johanna Painer

Overview: This workshop is directed towards veterinarians and students aiming to receive a basic understanding for applied reproduction management in zoological facilities. Options for intervention, from reproductive soundness evaluation and assisted reproduction to contraception are discussed. Regular reproduction is important to keep animals fertile and to grow ex situ endangered species populations. In the daily routine, zoo management and curators expect from the veterinarians to assist with problematic cases: either important animals are not producing the expected offspring or reproductive rate of selected individuals is desired to be slowed down. In the practical part, the participants will learn how to assess basic male fertility during sedation/anaesthesia and how ultrasonography can be employed in selected animal groups. Aim is to show the importance of an active role of the zoo veterinarian in endangered species breeding programs.

Imke Lüders DVM, PhD, DiplECZM, currently zoo veterinarian at the Münster Zoo Germany, consulting with veterinary service GEOlifes in more than 50 zoos and zoological institutions worldwide mainly in reproduction and assisted reproduction cases, supervising veterinary PhD students and conducting field projects through the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Pretoria, South Africa, advisor for the EAZA RMG, EAZA Biobank and Great Ape TAG reproduction and research advisor.

Presenter: Carsten Grondahl, Christine Lendl, Torsten Moller

Overview: Lectures on advanced monitoring, newest pharmacology including multimodal approaches, and topics requested from the participants, planned practical anaesthesia of an animal in the afternoon followed by discussion.

Carsten Grøndahl obtained a Ph.D. in anaesthesiology & pharmacology at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Copenhagen in 1992, has been an associate professor in Anaesthesia and Surgery at this university before becoming the chief veterinarian at Copenhagen Zoo in 1996. Carsten has led numerous postgraduate training seminars in anaesthesia, pain modulation, immobilisation, monitoring and the use of long acting neuroleptics in many countries, has given numerous talks and authored many publications, amongst which an anaesthesia chapter (musk ox) in Fowler's Zoo and Wild Animal Medicine Current Therapy, Volume 9.

Presenter: Marcus Clauss

Overview: Understanding of physiological principles and their practical translation into diets. Aimed at zoo veterinarians, participants will attend to an anatomical display, listen to lectures and experience reports, and do a short calculation/ration composition exercise. Participants will learn principles of decision-making about diets and about diet design, including options to rely on external services and manufacturers and on implementing monitoring methods.

Marcus Clauss is the Head of Research at the Clinic for Zoo Animals, Exotic Pets and Wildlife of the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Zurich. He has performed many studies on the digestive physiology of non-domestic species, and some studies on applied aspects of zoo animal nutrition. He acts as nutrition advisor for some EEPs and provides seminars on nutrition to zoos.

Presenter: Willem Schaftenaar, Con Mul

Overview: The focus of the workshop is on diagnosing lameness in elephants. The workshop will consist of 3 parts. In the first part, Willem will give a presentation on the differential diagnoses in lameness cases, the diagnostic approach, tools and treatment of lameness. Con will give a presentation about foot pedicure. The participants will be asked to submit at least one clinical case in advance. These cases will be discussed in the second part of the workshop. The third part is the practical part, in which the workshop participants will observe and videorecord in small groups 1 or 2 elephants according to the method described in the presentations, imaging technics will  be demonstrated, and Con will demonstrate foot pedicure.

Willem Schaftenaar graduated in 1978 from the vet school in Utrecht. After one year of general practice in the Netherlands, he worked for 9 years in 3 African countries for several development aid programs. The following 30 years he worked as zoo veterinarian at Rotterdam zoo. He retired from the zoo in 2014. Since 2005 he has been vet advisor to the EAZA elephant TAG. Since 2014 he has been active in health care programs for Asian elephants in range countries (Elephant Care International). 

Con Mul has been an elephant keeper for more than 30 years. He started in 1989 at Ouwehand Zoo. From 1996 till 2006 he worked at Rotterdam Zoo. In 2006, he started the elephant program at Ouwehand Zoo with African elephants. He has experience with both free contact and protected contact. Since 2014 he has been a consultant for several European zoos. From August 2019, he is also a member of the EAZA African elephant EEP species committee.

Overview: Understanding of a practical approach to diets - how can I judge that a feedstuff is okay? Commercial feedstuffs to buy or not to buy. Aimed at zoo veterinarians, participants will have hands-on experience on how to judge a feedstuff in groups and will rotate between different tables, will learn to make decision about which feedstuffs should be avoided and why.

Annette Liesegang is the Director and Chair of the Institute of Animal Nutrition of the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Zurich. She is board-certified for the European College of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition and President of the afore-mentioned College. She has performed several studies on applied exotic pet and zoo animal nutrition and is nutritional consultant in some zoos in Germany and Switzerland as well as in one in Sweden and one in Finland. She has organized full member summer school and workshops on nutrition to zoos.

Angela Gimmel is board-certified by the European College of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition, has been teaching in workshops, has been written her dissertation on vitamin supply in dolphins and is currently working at the Institute of Animal Nutrition as well as at a rehabilitation center in Utzenstorf, Switzerland.
