Overview: Lectures on respiratory pathophysiology during anaesthesia, severe anaesthetic complications, and practical procedures such as pinniped sedation and chimpanzee immobilisation. Participants are invited to submit questions and areas of interest before the masterclass so that the tutors and incorporate these into the plan of the day.

Carsten Grøndahl obtained a Ph.D. in anaesthesiology & pharmacology at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Copenhagen in 1992, and has been an associate professor in Anaesthesia and Surgery at this university before becoming the chief veterinarian at Copenhagen Zoo in 1996. Carsten has led numerous postgraduate training seminars in anaesthesia, pain modulation, immobilisation, monitoring and the use of long-acting neuroleptics in many countries, he's given numerous talks and authored many publications, amongst which an anaesthesia chapter (Musk Ox) in Fowler's Zoo and Wild Animal Medicine Current Therapy, Volume 9.

Torsten Möller acquired his DVM from the Veterinary School of Copenhagen, Denmark in 1997. After working in mixed and large animals practice, he became a clinician at Kolmården Zoo and Wildlife Park (KDP), Sweden in 2001 and has been the head of the veterinary department at the zoo since 2010. Consequently, Torsten is a general zoo mammal clinician, with special interest of anaesthesia and infectious diseases. He is the chair of the Nordic section of the EAZWV

Christine Lendl graduated from Munich Vet School in 1989, wrote a thesis on pulse oximetry and obtained her CertVA in 1993, having been University Assistant Anaesthetist at Cambridge. Since then, she has worked in practices and clinics in Germany, including Tierpark Hellabrunn, Munich, Zoologischer Garten Dresden, Zoo Augsburg. She has German specialisations in Anaesthesiology and Zoo and Wild Animal medicine. Since 2015 she is self-employed as consultant for various practices and clinics as well as training institutions, focussing on anaesthesia and exotics.

Presenter: Maya Ruetten, Marja kik

Overview: Do you want to enhance your ability to interpret cytology with a focus on zoo and wildlife cases? During this workshop you will learn how to best utilise this quick and effective tool, review its range of indications and refresh how to prepare good cytology. The keynote lecture will provide insight into classic and unusual entities from the point of a veteran zoo pathologist and we will work up cases provided by participants and experienced zoo and wildlife pathologists in an interactive session. This workshop is aimed at students, ECZM residents, zoo and exotic veterinarians and advanced practitioners. 

Maja Ruetten Dr med vet, DiplECVP, FVH (Veterinary Pathology). Maja graduated from Zurich Veterinary School in 2000, after which she directly joint private practice in the Swiss mountains. In 2001 she started her doctoral thesis in veterinary pathology, completing it in 2004, before moving on to a Residency at the University in Zurich, Switzerland. Maja has been a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists since 2008 and fulfilled the role of Senior Zoo Pathologist at the Institute of Pathology of University of Zurich. In 2016 she founded a private diagnostic laboratory in Tagelswangen (Zurich). Her main research interest is iron metabolism in exotic species. Maja is an elected member of the council of Swiss Veterinarian and co- editor of the oldest veterinary journal in the world, the Swiss Archive of Veterinary Medicine.

Marja Kik, DVM, PhD, Dip. ECZM (Herpetology), Dip Vet Path RNVA, is senior pathologist exotic animals at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University., Utrecht, the Netherlands. She also has a private practice in which she treats reptiles and amphibians.

Presenter: Michelle Davis

Overview: This masterclass on Penguin Medicine is intended to dive deeply into the world of penguins and will cover diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and the most common (and some more obscure) diseases of captive penguins. ECZM/ACZM topics will be highlighted during discussions.

Michelle Davis is the Head of the Aquatic Health Department at the Wildlife Conservation Society's New York Aquarium in Brooklyn, NY and the current President of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians. Prior to joining the WCS team, Michelle worked as a veterinarian at Georgia Aquarium, SeaWorld Orlando, and the Oklahoma City Zoo. She obtained her veterinary degree from Louisiana State University and completed internships at Angell Animal Medical Centre in Boston, MA and Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, CT. She then completed a 3-year residency in zoo and aquarium medicine at the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Shedd Aquarium, and the Brookfield Zoo, all in Chicago, IL. She enjoys the diversity of taxa and experiences she's had in her career, loves working with the passionate animal teams at zoos and aquaria, and has had a fondness for penguins since she was a young child. She's been fortunate enough to work directly with 8 species of penguins and to travel to Cape Town, South Africa and work with rehabilitating African penguins.

Disease surveillance planning: from design to action

Overview: The introduction of the new EU Animal Health Law across the EU replaces much veterinary legislation, including the Balai Directive (92/65/EEC).  The approval of confined establishments (the new term for approved bodies, institutes and centres), is based upon new requirements including an up-to-date disease surveillance plan for the zoological collection.
This workshop is designed for zoo vets and aims to: 

Introduce participants to the topic of disease surveillance planning within a confined establishment alongside the legal requirements from the AHL
Discuss how to design and create a disease surveillance plan and how these can be adapted to local epidemiology, collection specifics and disease outbreaks
Highlight the role of zoonoses control and mitigation within a disease surveillance plan through disease risk assessment 
Show how effecting disease surveillance planning can contribute to the health of a confined establishment, but also to the wider population health of animals across EAZA 
Demonstrate the role of disease surveillance planning within the wider context of preventative health care within a confined establishment 
be prepared for Notifiable infectious disease outbreak , in order to recue impact on their establishment and accelerate the return to a normal confined establishment status and function.

The workshop will be a mixture of short theoretical lectures, group discussions and practical case studies.  Participants are encouraged to bring along the current plans from their institutions, which can be discussed within the session.

Allan Muir qualified from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies (Edinburgh, UK) in 2012.  After 5 years in clincial practice treating exotic pets and companion animals, alongside zoo work, he undertook an MSc in Wild Animal Health at ZSL/Royal Veterinary College (London, UK). Upon obtaining his MSc in 2017, he began working for EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria).  His current role is focussed on the development of EU animal health policy, and supporting its implementation across the EAZA Membership, including the new EU Animal Health Law.  In addition to this policy work, he is a member of  EAZA accreditation screening missions, acting as a rapporteur.  His professional interests include; preventative health care within a zoological collection, EEP population health, ex-situ conservation and capacity building.

Presenter: Tom Hellebuyck

Overview: Reproductive disorders remain one of the most frequently encountered problems in the reptile patient. Surgical management is often the best option for resolving  preovulatory follicular stasis (ovariectomy) and dystocia (ovariosalpingectomy). Castration in lizards and chelonians is indicated towards e.g. the reduction of intra- and interspecies aggression, population control and although less commonly encountered, the prevention and treatment of testicular pathology. Thoroughly planned and performed surgery techniques can help to speed up recovery time and minimize pain.  
This wet lab will teach participants how to carry out reproductive surgical procedures in reptiles. Basic to more advanced techniques will be included. This wetlab mainly aims at students, vets that see reptile patients on a regular basis but also the more advanced practitioner.  
All procedures will be performed on cadavers. Prior to the lab, an overview of the different procedures for the practical part will be given during a short presentation. Depending on availability of cadavers, participants will have the opportunity to perform ovariectomy, ovariosalpingectomy and/or castration in lizards, snakes and (endoscopy-assisted) ovariectomy and castration in chelonians. Every participants is asked to bring a surgical kit. 

Tom Hellebuyck is head of clinic at the division for exotic companion animals  of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Ghent University (Belgium). In 2006, he got his master degree as a veterinarian and finished his PhD in veterinary sciences with a focus on dermatological diseases in lizards in 2012. Tom became a diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine (Herpetological Medicine) in 2013. He is an author and co-author of several  scientific publications and book chapters and continues his clinical research activities in reptile and avian medicine. He is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences and symposia and is a member of a number of organizations concerned with veterinary medicine and herpetological societies. In addition, he acts as an advisor to authorities with regard to reptile medicine and welfare. 

Ferran Solanes Vilanova is a resident for the European College of Zoological Medicine (ECZM) – Herpetological Medicine specialty - at the division for exotic companion animals of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Ghent University (Belgium). In 2019 he got his master degree in veterinary medicine and followed an exotic companion animal internship at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain) which he successfully completed in 2021. Ferran is an author and co-author of several scientific publications. 

Presenter: Willem Schaftenaar, Con Mul

Overview: The focus of the workshop is on diagnosing lameness in elephants. The workshop will consist of 3 parts. In the first part, Willem will give a presentation on the differential diagnoses in lameness cases, the diagnostic approach, tools and treatment of lameness. Con will give a presentation about foot pedicure. The participants will be asked to submit at least one clinical case in advance. These cases will be discussed in the second part of the workshop. The third part is the practical part, in which the workshop participants will observe and videorecord in small groups 1 or 2 elephants according to the method described in the presentations, imaging techniques will  be demonstrated, and Con will demonstrate foot pedicure.

Willem Schaftenaar graduated in 1978 from the vet school in Utrecht. After one year of general practice in the Netherlands, he worked for 9 years in 3 African countries for several development aid programs. The following 30 years he worked as zoo veterinarian at Rotterdam zoo. He retired from the zoo in 2014. Since 2005 he has been vet advisor to the EAZA elephant TAG. Since 2014 he has been active in health care programs for Asian elephants in range countries (Elephant Care International). 

Con Mul has been an elephant keeper for more than 30 years. He started in 1989 at Ouwehand Zoo. From 1996 till 2006 he worked at Rotterdam Zoo. In 2006, he started the elephant program at Ouwehand Zoo with African elephants. He has experience with both free contact and protected contact. Since 2014 he has been a consultant for several European zoos. From August 2019, he is also a member of the EAZA African elephant EEP species committee.
