Hugo Fernández

Head Veterinarian, Barcelona Zoo


Hugo Fernández obtained his veterinary degree at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Veterinary School in 1999. He performed post-graduate studies at the veterinary pathology department there, and finalized his PhD on immunology of Leishmania infection in 2013. He is a guest researcher and guest scholar at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona since 2014.

Hugo has served as head veterinarian at Barcelona Zoo since 2004. He was actively involved in the veterinary committee of the Iberian Zoo & Aquaria Association (AIZA), on which he served as coordinator in 2007 and 2008. He is veterinary advisor for Gazella dorcas since 2012.

Hugo joined EAZWV in 2003, and has since been actively involved in the association, participating in the conferences, and the Transmissible Diseases Handbook, and lately in hosting and organizing the 2015 Conference in Barcelona. Hugo was served as EAZWV Vice-President from 2016-2018 and was elected to take on the role of president at the 2018 General Assembly.
