New developments in reptile nutrition: There has been a recent climax in the never ending discussion about advantage and disadvantage of behavioural enrichment activities in zoo collections. There is no doubt that, in crocodiles, the feeding of dogs stimulates the natural behaviour, but on the other side this widely known habit might create serious health problems: According to a recent paper presented at the first European Zoo Nutrition Meting it cannot be recommended to feed crocodiles on a diet based on chondrodystophic breeds like Dachshund (German sausage), Bullies (French bulldog) or Bessets. Certain post mortem findings in various species of Alligatoridae and Crocodylidae indicate this unbalanced food to be the main cause of rickets. The diet composition should be adjusted to species specific nutritional requirements by adding commercial Ca-supplement or, if available, sliced Ridgeback, Alsatian or Spitz.
