I would like to take the opportunity to welcome Allan Muir to our community. Allan has recently taken up the role of EAZA EU Policy Coordinator in Brussels where he will be working closely with the EU Commission on policy impacting zoo and wildlife health.

Allan graduated from Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Medicine, Edinburgh in 2012 and completed the MSc in Wild Animal Health at Royal Veterinary College and ZSL in 2016. His interests within our field are broad and include emerging European wildlife diseases, disease-mediated extinction and the impacts of legislation on free-living and captive wild animal health and welfare.  Allan was inspired to work within our sector from life long interests in bird watching and exploring natural history- both of which likely stem from childhood holidays in the Scottish wilderness.

To date he has worked primarily in a private exotics referral practice in London which in turn oversaw the care of two local zoological collections. He has also spent time in a number of larger zoo vet departments namely RZSS Edinburgh Zoo (as a vet student), Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation and most recently ZSL London and Whipsnade (as part of his MSc in Wild Animal Health).

Longer term Allan hopes to continue his career within our incredible field and within his new role to improve the inputs, dialogue and understanding of the legislation process of EAZA members and wild animal vets.

Allan will be taking up an important role within our joint EAZWV/EAZA legislation working group and I am sure you will all give him a warm welcome.
